Winter Skincare Rituals
Come winter and it is time for freezing temperatures, cozy evenings and endless mugs of hot chocolate. But it is also a time when the air is persistently dry with low levels of humidity. And as the mercury drops, it is our skin that often bears the brunt of seasonal change long before we feel it ourselves. There is dryness, dullness, and discomfort that the skin faces during the cold season. “Winter poses several challenges for the skin. The sudden drop in temperature and humidity impairs the skin’s ability to retain moisture, leading to dryness, flakiness, and tightness. Many also experience redness and irritation due to a compromised skin barrier. Even individuals with oily or combination skin can find their skin behaving unpredictably – dry patches in some areas and excess oil in others. Indoor heating further exacerbates this imbalance, stripping the skin of hydration and leaving it dull and uncomfortable” says Piyush Jain, Founder, SkinInspired.
The skin often feels lacklustre due to reduced sebum production, while pre-existing conditions like eczema, rosacea, and psoriasis can flare up. “Additionally, people tend to drink less water during colder months, which further compromises skin hydration and elasticity. Even oily skin types can experience dehydration, making it crucial to distinguish between oil and moisture balance” says Rishabh Jain, Cofounder, The Wellness Co. Further, slower cell turnover in cold weather leads to a buildup of dead skin cells, making the skin appear lifeless despite having naturally melanin-rich undertones that should glow year-round. “The key is not to ‘fix’ winter skin — it is to maintain barrier integrity before problems emerge” says Ishwarya Iyer, Founder & CEO, B.Bath.
Key Elements of Winter Skincare
A winter skin care routine should focus on repairing, replenishing, and protecting the skin barrier. The key elements include gentle cleansing, deep hydration, adequate moisturization, barrier protection, sun protection, and internal nourishment. A healthy barrier ensures hydration and resilience. The focus should be on using products that restore and maintain this balance without causing irritation. “The skin barrier must be protected through occlusive and emollient-rich formulations. Ingredients like ceramides, squalane, and plant butters (shea, kokum) create a protective seal without suffocating the skin” adds Iyer. She further adds that winter skincare should be predictable and calming; avoid introducing aggressive actives or high-concentration treatments during this season. The goal is maintenance, not transformation. Simple, consistent rituals prevent the sensory overload that often causes families to skip routines altogether. “A gentle, non-stripping cleanser is essential to prevent dehydration. Follow with a ceramide-rich moisturizer to reinforce the skin barrier and seal in moisture. And even in winter, sunscreen remains non-negotiable – UV rays and blue light exposure continue year-round, impacting skin health and aging” adds Piyush Jain.
Ideal Winter Skincare Regime
According to Piyush Jain, an easy and effective winter skincare regime includes a hydrating cleanser that purifies without stripping the skin, a multi-molecular hyaluronic acid serum to deeply hydrate and plump, a ceramide-rich moisturizer to strengthen the barrier and improve texture as well as a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect against UV and digital light exposure. For night time, he also recommends introducing a low-concentration retinol cream to promote renewal – provided the skin is well-hydrated. This combination keeps the skin nourished, supple, and radiant through the season. Also, before or after bathing, take 2-3 minutes to massage a lightweight oil into damp skin. “At night, layer a rich, whipped body butter over areas prone to dryness like the elbows, knees, heels, hands” mentions Iyer.
According to Rishabh Jain, combining clinical therapies with a personalized home care routine leads to lasting results. “IV nutrient therapy helps replenish essential vitamins, antioxidants, and hydration at a cellular level, countering dryness and dullness from within. Red Light Therapy (RLT) boosts collagen production, enhances circulation, and accelerates skin repair, making it ideal for combating the effects of harsh winter weather” says Rishabh Jain.
Tips for Working Women
For working women or those managing hectic festive schedules, an effective winter skincare routine should focus on consistency over complexity. A simple yet powerful three-step morning ritual, cleanse, hydrate, and protect, can go a long way. During festive weeks, incorporate a gentle leave-on exfoliant once a week, and indulge in a hydrating mask or glow serum to revive tired skin. Keep a travel-size moisturizer and sunscreen on hand for quick reapplication; these small steps maintain comfort and luminosity through busy days. “Make skincare a shared family ritual. When children see parents massaging oil calmly and not rushing, it becomes a cue for winding down” adds Iyer.
All in all, winter skincare extends beyond creams and cleansers, it is a holistic ritual that blends lifestyle, nutrition and internal nourishment. “Staying well-hydrated, eating a nutrient-dense diet rich in antioxidants, and getting quality sleep forms the foundation for naturally radiant skin. Limiting caffeine and alcohol, both of which deplete moisture, also supports skin suppleness and glow. Ultimately, glowing skin is a reflection of internal balance, when you nourish your body, manage stress, and embrace rejuvenating therapies, your skin naturally mirrors that harmony” says Rishabh Jain.
